Overall, were the Crusades good or bad for the Church?

If the foundation for the very first crusade was Pope Urban II promising instant entrance into heaven without purgatory, then obviously the whole charade was not of God to begin with. Such a deceitful promise is anti-christian to the core, and the Pope had a lot of gall to proclaim what essentially amounts to a works-salvation. To make matters worse, on their way to Jerusalem, the Crusaders gave Jews the choice of either baptism or death; then when they finally entered Jerusalem, the first item on the agenda was to herd the Jews into the synagogue and set it ablaze. One wonders why you even asked the question.
